Jarrod Jacobs: “Thoughts And Prayers”

After the school shooting in Florida, I heard some folks who made light of the statement that “our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and all others affected by the killer.” They were making light of this because they suggested that “thoughts and prayers” are not enough in this situation. Some even said, “prayers won’t stop bullets.” Evidently, these folks never read Isaiah 37:33-34 that records the time when a prayer stopped 185,000 arrows from firing!

In response to the statement that “thoughts and prayers are not enough,” I noticed some were highly offended that this was said. I can understand such a reaction. It offended me. As I thought more about their reaction, though, I realized that this might be a justifiable response. Please let me explain. If the people responding negatively to the statement about “thoughts and prayers” are doing so because those they meet are acting like those described in James 2; then I agree that speaking about offering “thoughts and prayers” are nothing but empty words. Remember, those in James two were guilty of telling those in need, “depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled” (Jas. 2:16). How is this helping anyone? If people hear Christians say, “I’ll pray for you” but never see action, then something is wrong!

However, if folks who criticize others for saying their “thoughts and prayers” are with them mean to say that offering prayers has no power, then I disagree vehemently. By inspiration, James teaches us, The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (Jas. 5:16). Elijah prayed for the rain to stop, and it did. Three and a half years later, he prayed for it to begin raining, and it did (Jas. 5:17-18). Hezekiah prayed for deliverance from Syria, and later for his own life, and God gave him what he asked (Isa. 36-38). It is the prayers of the righteous that are heard by God (I Pet. 3:12). Anyone who has read the Bible for any length of time knows of the great heroes who were active in prayers (Daniel, Nehemiah, Elijah, Jesus, Paul, etc.). A Christian offering a prayer is one who has access to the greatest power on earth! In such cases, “thoughts and prayers” are more than enough!

No friends, prayers are not weak. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (Jas. 5:16)! There are situations in life when praying is all that earthly hands can do, just as in Hezekiah’s case, and this is enough. Prayers offered by the righteous to God needs to continue for the nation and for individuals all over the world (I Thess. 5:17). However, as James teaches, when we have the opportunity to do something and refuse to do it, then we are not living by faith! Therefore, if men are merely “mouthing” the words, then no, prayers do no good. However, fervent prayers offered by Christians pierce Heaven and bring blessings on all (I Pet. 3:10-12)! Let us pray!
