During Super Bowl 50, an ad for Doritos chips caught folks’ attention. The ad depicts a husband and wife watching an ultrasound of their unborn baby. As they watch, the husband begins to eat some Doritos. As he eats, he notices the baby responding to him eating the chips, and reaching out as if he wanted some chips, too. Space forbids a complete description of the ad. Nevertheless, it was a very cute ad.

    Shortly after the ad was broadcast, the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) went to Twitter and criticized this commercial. They said the ad uses the “antichoice tactic of humanizing fetuses ….” What a charge!

    To portray what parents see in an ultrasound in a humorous way is considered by NARAL to be “antichoice” and “humanizing” a fetus. Their very statement ought to show us a hard truth. Put simply, the people of NARAL, and others like them, do not consider a pregnant woman to be carrying a human inside of her! Pray tell, what is she carrying? Is she carrying kittens? Is she carrying a watermelon? What is forming within her body? It emerges as a human. What was in there?

    Let us remember what God has said. This is the most important thing! God’s word says that an unborn child is a child! What the mother carries is not an “unviable tissue mass.” What the mother carries is not something to be deemed not “human!” Please study passages like Genesis 25:21-24; Exodus 21:22-23; Psalm 139:14-16; Jeremiah 1:4-5; and Luke 1:39-44. In so doing, we will learn what God thinks of the unborn. Passages such as these make it clear that when a woman is with child, she is just that, with CHILD! She is a human, and is carrying a human inside of her! Doritos did not “humanize” anything that wasn’t already human.

    Sadly, this “humanizing” is a problem for folks like NARAL. This is because if they can convince a mother that what she is carrying is not human, then it is easier to murder. This is why folks who wish to encourage women to have abortions have also tried to discourage pregnant women from having ultrasounds. When a pregnant woman sees an ultrasound, and hears a heartbeat, she cannot say that what is within her is not alive and is not something in need of love and protection. She now understands something that the Bible said thousands of years before this technology existed! Namely, that this unborn child is a living human child! Furthermore, this child is a separate entity from its mother. In other words, the mantra “It’s a woman’s body” is unsound reasoning because the unborn baby is its own person, not an appendage of the mother’s body! The child has its own heart, brain, organs, fingers, toes, eyes, blood vessels, and even a separate blood type at times! All of these facts prove the child is a human child, and a separate being from its mother’s body!

    Children need our love, protection, and respect. There is nothing on this earth more innocent. The unborn are free from sin and the blight of wrong (Ezek. 18:20). Children are gifts from God (Ps. 127:3). Let us be thankful for them and take care of them. Let us “bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4)! Let us not fall for the lie that says unborn children are not humans!
