"Hot" Bears open season at 4-1

With four wins in five games, the Butler County boys' basketball team is off to an impressive start to the 2017-18 season.  The Bears defeated Metcalfe County 78-52 on November 28, fell to Breckinridge County 80-79 on November 30, beat Thomas Nelson 81-36 on December 2, earned a hard-fought 69-62 win on December 4 against McLean County, and defeated Nelson County 77-67 on December 5.

"I am pleased with our progress at this point. We just want to get better every day. That’s been our focus," said BCHS head coach Calvin Dockery.  "Our kids play hard, they give effort. That’s all I can ask."

Placing four players in double figures, the Butler County Bears kicked off the 2017-18 season with a lopsided road win over Metcalfe County, 78-52.

Will Moore and Brennan Grubb led the way in scoring with 18 points each.  Jaden Hurt and Caleb Beasley chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively. 

The Bears took control early with a 31-16 halftime advantage and never let up.  Butler County was 11 for 17 from the free throw line and knocked down 4 three-pointers for the game.

Despite a 39-26 halftime lead, the Bears lost a heartbreaker on the road at Breckinridge County, 80-79.  The Tigers turned in a strong second half, scoring 21 and 33 points, to snatch the game away from the Bears in the end. 

Will Moore led the Bears in scoring with 24 points.  Butler County had four more players in double figures - Grubb (18), Rice (13), Beasley (12), Hurt (10).

The Bears sank 9 three-pointers and were 19 for 22 from the free throw line.

Butler County easily dispatched Thomas Nelson, 81-36, in a home match-up.  The Bears had four players in double figures - Moore and Grubb both finished with 19 points; Beasley had 16 and Rice added 12 points. 

Butler County was 11 for 17 from the free throw line and hit 10 three pointers for the game.

The Bears used a strong third quarter and another balanced scoring attack to defeat Third Region foe McLean County 69-62. 

Moore and Grubb once again paced the Bears' scoring efforts.  Moore finished with 23 points and Grubb had 17.  Beasley chipped in 14 points. 

Butler County was 16 for 27 from the free throw line and hit three three-pointers - all by Brennan Grubb.

Led by a 34-performance night by Will Moore, Butler County earned another hard-fought win, 77-67, against Nelson County.

Trailing by two points at the half, 34-32, the Bears turned in a strong fourth quarter performance, outscoring their opponents 22-12, en route to the win.

Joining Moore in double figures were Beasley with 12 points, Rice with 11, and Hurt with 10 points.

The Bears had three three-pointers (all by Moore) and were 28 for 38 from the free throw line.

Butler County hosts Madisonville-North Hopkins on December 7 at 7:30 p.m.; are at Apollo on December 12, 7 p.m. start; host Ohio County on December 15 at 7:30 p.m.; and travel to Daviess County on December 18 for a 7:30 start.
