Holiday Safety Tips from Morgantown Police Department

The Holiday shopping season is upon us and I want to give residents and shoppers a few safety tips so your property will stay with its rightful owner.  While the majority of us go about their shopping in the legal and honest way, there are some who don’t.  While most get their discounts at malls and stores on Gray Thursday, Black Friday, or Cyber Monday, some prefer the “five-finger discount.”
With that in mind, I want to forewarn residents that there are those out there who aren’t afraid to break into your house of vehicle and steal your possessions.  Over the past two weeks, there have been three residents of Morgantown who have had their vehicles stolen.  All have been recovered or located, but the vehicles have sustained damage.
Listed below are a few shopping safety tips:

  • For women, don’t carry more that you absolutely need to in your purse.  A heavy purse is one more package to worry about, and if stolen, the less personal information and valuables it contains the better.
  • Be alert and walk with purpose.  Thieves want an easy target, someone who is distracted and inattentive.  If you can, shop with a friend, there is safety in numbers.
  • Don’t leave valuables, packages and purchases in plain sight in your car.  Make sure you click on your alarm and lock your doors.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and if you are not comfortable, go back to the mall or store and ask their security to escort you to your car.
  • Make note of where you park and the entrance you used so you can go directly to your car without wandering.
  • Thieves often “shop” in food courts. Don’t leave handbags and gifts unattended.
  • Carry only the credit cards you intend to use and avoid carrying large sums of money.  Secure your credit card receipts.  Someone gaining access to your credit card numbers could be the first step in having your identity stolen.
  • Park your car in well lit area and be aware of your surroundings.  Have your keys out and ready before you get to your car.  Look your car over as you approach it to make sure everything is okay.

If you make quick stops while shopping, make sure you lock your doors and don’t leave your vehicle running after exiting you vehicle.  A running vehicle is an invitation for a thief to steal your car.  And when you get home for the day, lock your vehicle and don’t leave your keys in it!!
