HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Bears roll past Whitesville Trinity for district win

MORGANTOWN - Butler County rolled past visiting Whitesville Trinity 14-3 in five innings in a 12th District softball game on Monday.District foes, Butler County and Whitesville Trinity are longtime rivals. With the win, Butler County improved to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in the 12th District. Whitesville Trinity dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the district with the loss.

The Lady Raiders fared well early, plating three runs in the top half of the first inning. But Butler County answered, scoring a half-dozen runs to move ahead 6-3. Homestanding Butler County moved ahead during its initial plate appearance and never trailed again.

Butler County pitcher Kylee Smith pitched a complete game and earned the win. Smith surrendered three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out two and walking zero.

Whitesville Trinity pitcher Nina Wathen took the loss. Wathen went three and a third innings, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits and striking out one.

Butler County piled up a dozen hits in the winning effort. Smith, Bayleigh Alford and Aleace Hall each provided two hits apiece for Butler County in the victory.

Chipping in offensively for the Bears, Olivia Jones, Amber Thacker, Hannah Chaney (solo home run), Dixie Garnier, Autumn Proctor and Ashley Thacker contributed one hit apiece.

Whitesville Trinity was limited to five hits in the loss.

Wathen, Brittney Mills, Brittany Booker, Savannah Aull and McKenzie Roberts led the limited Whitesville Trinity offensive effort with one hit apiece.

Each high school softball team committed one error.

Both Butler County and Whitesville Trinity will compete in the 12th District Softball Tournament later in the month.
