HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Bears eliminate Whitesville Trinity, 7-2

BROWNSVILLE - Butler County passed its first test in the postseason, beating Whitesville Trinity 7-2 in the opening round of the 12th District Softball Tournament at Edmonson County on Wednesday.

With the win, Butler County improved to 18-9 and advances to the 12th District title game.

Whitesville Trinity ended its season 8-16 with the loss.

The Bears scored first and never trailed. Setting the tone early, Butler County plated three runs in the bottom half of the opening inning. 

Butler County pitcher Kylee Smith threw a complete game and earned the win. Smith allowed 12 hits and two runs while striking out one and walking zero over seven innings.

Whitesville Trinity pitcher Nina Wathen took the loss. Wathen surrendered seven runs on 10 hits over six innings.

Butler County excelled early as Dixie Garnier hit a home run in the first inning. 

Whitesville Trinity lost despite outhitting the Bears 12-10. 

Aleace Hall, Olivia Jones and Autumn Proctor each provided multiple hits for Butler County in the postseason victory. Hall went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bears' offensive attack. Jones provided three RBIs while Garnier drove in two runs for the Bears. 

Avery Barnett, Erin Kinsey, Cassidy Morris and Brittney Booker led Whitesville Trinity with two hits apiece. 

Butler County overcame two errors to notch the win. 

The Bears are slated to face Grayson County in the 12th District Softball Tournament title game at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Both the champion and runner-up from the 12th District will advance to the 3rd Region Softball Tournament.
