Heritage Farms Welcomes BC Extension Service & Farm Bureau Field Day

The Annual Butler County Extension Service and Butler County Farm Bureau Field Day was held in the  Sharer community this year on Heritage Farm, owned and operated by Martin, Rhonda, Craig, and Gabrielle Cohron.

After registration, Martin Cohron welcomed everyone to Heritage Farms. He shared a little about their farm and quickly gave the credit of its operation to his son.
“He went to Western and got an agriculture degree, came back and took over the farm.  I then went to Western and started working,” said Martin Cohron.

Shane Wells and Diane Dyer of Beech Tree News and WLBQ 101.5.

Shane Wells, President of Butler County Farm Bureau, presented Excellence in Agriculture Journalism Awards to Beech Tree News, WLBQ 101.5, and the Banner.

Mark Scherer of the Banner.

Everyone boarded the hay wagons and traveled down the field a bit to the first presentation. For those that preferred an alternative program Tracy Cowles, FCS Agent, did an Alcohol Ink Tile Craft.

The alfalfa square bale hay demonstration was very informative and promoted several questions by those in attendance.  Craig Cohron explained how to unload the square bales and why and explained the operation of the Maxalator Accmagrapple.

Next, Cohron introduced Earnest Weaver, Territory manager for Byron Seeds.  He talked about managing an alfalfa stand.  He said “I like establishing alfalfa in the fall.  The first leaves you see coming up are cotyledons.  As that plant gets taller, alfalfa pulls itself back into the soil.  I love fall seedlings but let’s try to think about late summer seedlings”.

The meal was provided by Butler County Farm Bureau.  Drinks were provided by Green River Feed Mill.  Desserts were provided by Drake’s Farm Service.  Tour drinks were provided by Circle B Welding.
