Guthrie Selected as Top Republican on Health Subcommittee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) this week was selected as the top Republican, or ranking member, of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee.

“I look forward to serving as the top Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee,” said Guthrie. “The Health Subcommittee has broad jurisdiction over the health care sector and federal health agencies responsible for our nation’s response to the COVID-19 public health emergency, including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In this new leadership role, I will continue to help with our country’s pandemic response efforts and combat the opioid crisis.”

Guthrie brings more than a decade of experience serving on the Energy and Commerce Committee. In the 116th Congress, Guthrie served as top Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. In this position, Guthrie conducted oversight of the nation’s COVID-19 response efforts and published recommendations to help with those efforts though the Second Wave Preparedness Project. In the 114th and 115th Congresses, Guthrie was the vice chair of the Health Subcommittee. Guthrie also chaired E&C’s Medicaid Task Force that was announced in 2015 to find ways to improve this program to better serve the country’s most vulnerable.

Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Republican Leader of E&C said, “Republican Subcommittee Leader on Health Brett Guthrie is uniquely qualified to lead on policies defining the future of America's economy, particularly how we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and win the future of health care. Our goal is to maximize Energy and Commerce so we secure America’s global leadership to usher in a new era of innovation and entrepreneurship, cure diseases, and raise people’s standard of living, and make health care more affordable. “

Guthrie continued, “I’m ready to get to work with E&C Republican Leader Rodgers to advance health care legislative priorities for Kentuckians as well as all Americans.”
