Guthrie Named to Education and the Workforce Subcommittees

This week, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) was named to two subcommittees for the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

“This year, the committee will build off of last year’s work to reauthorize the Higher Education Act as well as the Elementary and Secondary Education Act,” said Congressman Guthrie.  “This is important work and I’m looking forward to continuing to find solutions that put our students first and give today’s teachers the tools they need to succeed in the classroom.”

The Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training has jurisdiction over education and training above the high school level.  The Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions has jurisdiction over all employee-employer relations, including the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA).

“Kentucky’s Second District is home to many world-class institutions for higher education and workforce development.  Working together, we can address the issues facing today’s students, like student loan reform and adding greater transparency to the system,” said Congressman Guthrie.

“Last year Congress and the White House were able to work together to reauthorize our nation’s workforce training laws.  I’m hopeful that we can continue to work together on this issue as the law is implemented to further promote the education and skills needed to succeed in today’s global economy.  The vast majority of businesses that I visit tell me that they are ready to hire qualified workers with the right skills.  Manufacturing jobs in particular are in high demand – and pay well.  One of the best ways we can invest in the middle class is by making sure workers are getting the training they need to advance in their jobs and provide financial stability for their families,” added Congressman Guthrie.

This is Congressman Guthrie’s third term serving on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and on these two subcommittees.  In addition, he also serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, where he is Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Health and serves on the Communications and Technology and Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittees.
