Green River Museum opens 2015 season

1930 Iron Highway Sign for Lock 4

Green River Museum's Season Opening Celebration was held on Saturday, June 13.  Butler County's rich history is revealed in the fascinating objects recently acquired by the museum. New items include the turn-of-the-century offering table from the now razed African American Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Morgantown, a ca. 1930 iron highway sign for Lock No. 4, a ca. 1968 menu from the Flener Hotel, and several original George Dabbs photographs.

On display during the month of June is the recently acquired Hampton Textile Collection, a group of late 19th century-early 20th century bedspreads, quilts, counterpanes, and blankets from the family of William and Margaret Hampton. Included in that collection are a ca. 1870 wool blanket and the Great Wheel upon which the wool thread was originally spun.

Also, learn more about the history of the 1907 statue on the Courthouse lawn and about one of Butler County's 19th century cabinet makers, Henry Gibbs.

The Lawrence Family provided music on the porch of the Superintendent's House, while several skilled artisans demonstrated their crafts on the lawn.
