Green River Chapter NSDAR Summer Activities

Peggy Boaz hosted the Green River Chapter NSDAR for the summer social.

On Saturday, June 15, 2013, Peggy Boaz was host to the Green River Chapter NSDAR for their summer social.  Following potluck lunch, Peggy gave a tour of the gardens and school. The Green River Chapter held its meeting in the school where Peggy gave the program on the history of the log school.   Several present were closely connected to the school.Twelve members, one HODAR, five guests and four C.A.R. members were present.

Melanie Hunt presented a DAR 40 year pin to Christine Coleman, who joined DAR December 10, 1971.


Green River Chapter NSDAR Regent Melanie Hunt attended Continental Congress in Washington, D.C., and came back with a glowing report of all her activities.  She delivered her report to the Green River Chapter on July 15th at the regular monthly meeting.  Melanie is now the KSDAR Chairman of Pages for the new KSDAR administration and representing Kentucky at the State and National Conferences.

August Meeting at Antique Shop -  August 19th.
The J. Marshall & Judi Hughes Building was the scene of the August Green River Chapter DAR meeting on Monday, August 19, 2013.  Following a delicious potluck supper, the meeting was held in the 1940s period room of the Antique Shop. 
Treasurer Peggy Boaz presented a $300.00 check to Mr. Bob Wilson, Director of Andrea's Mission for Men for the work that the residents did to cleanup of the Bell Street Cemetery back in May.  They were able to purchase some much needed equipment and are available for mowing and cleanup projects.

Ethan Levi Johnson, a 2013 graduate of Butler County High School is the first recipient of the Green River Chapter NSDAR C.A.R. Scholarship.  Levi is enrolled at Western Kentucky University for the fall term.  He received the $1,000.00 Scholarship Award presented by Treasurer Peggy Boaz. 
To qualify for the scholarship, a graduating senior must have been an active member of the Green River Society Children of the American for a period long enough to have rendered service in the local and state societies, a participant in the various and sundry activities of the club.
Levi is a member of the Green River Society Children of the American Revolution and served as President in 2010.   He also served as KSCAR state historian and as a state chairman several times.  He, along with 6 other members of the Green River CAR attended the NSCAR National conference in Washington, D.C., in 2009. 
Levi is the son of Calvin Johnson, and Rachel and Josh Givens.  His grandparents are Rayburn and Brenda Johnson, the late Louise Burden Odle, and Denzil and Christine Coleman.

Shelia Hunt presented the program on "The White Squaw", an excerpt from the book entitled,
Empire of the Summer Moon, by S.C. Gwynne, from the KSDAR suggested reading list.
The White Squaw was the story of Cynthia Ann Parker, who was kidnapped by the Comanche Indians in 1836 and lived with them for 24 years.  Her legendary son, Quanah Parker, was the last chief of the Comanche.  John Wayne starred in a movie about this true story.
