Givens Tells of Butler County's Role In Civil War

Roger Givens

The fact that historian and former journalist Roger Givens is quite a storyteller became apparent to those attending “Coffee Talk With Roger” Saturday morning at the Butler County Public Library. Moving seamlessly from one story to another, the narrative covered Civil War history involvement of the county’s three major towns of Rochester, Morgantown and Woodbury.

Memoir accounts were quoted from, as were newspaper accounts of the time and beyond. “The two most famous prison escapes of the war were both led by Butler County men,” said Givens. The two men were Andrew Hamilton of the Union Army and Thomas Hines of the Confederacy.

In was just one of the many interesting program offered by the Butler County Public Library free of charge.
