Give Back to the Earth

Tammy Deweese took her homework assignment very seriously. Professor Jared Hanley of Owensboro Community College gave Tammy a few choices for her " Give Back to the Earth Project. " She rounded up friends and relatives from six families this past Thursday. They filled twelve large construction bags with trash from the Rochester Dam.

Butler County is fortunate to have people like Tammy living here. She is a part-time bus driver, part-time mail carrier, part-time student, full-time wife, and mother. Just a few of the things her crew picked up in the rain were a porta-potty, boots, metal door, electrical wire, tire, plastic bags, aluminum cans, and beer bottles. As this trash works its way down the Green, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers, it ends up in the Gulf of Mexico, killing fish, birds, and turtles along the way when the trash is mistaken for food.

It takes twenty years for a plastic storage bag to break down, plastic bottles, four hundred years and a tin can, fifty years. Glass, styrofoam, and tinfoil stay in the environment forever.

The City of Morgantown and Butler County have a Countywide cleanup at the end of the month.

April 29th and 30th, 7 AM to 5 PM

May 1st, 7 AM to Noon

This is a free cleanup for the County and City. They will accept items such as old lawn furniture, computers, appliances, and things not collected in regular trash pickup. Workers will assist in the unloading—a maximum of four tires and no roofing or hazardous chemicals.

Dumpsters will be located at the Butler County Road Department at462 Boat Factory Road.

The City of Rochester will also have a dumpster at the park.

 Great job Tammy!
