Game Preview: Bears, Wildcats to spar in Brownsville
Butler County will take its 6-3 record to Edmonson County (4-5) tonight to square off against a familiar foe. The last regular-season game, Butler County High School Head Coach Ryan Emmick is hoping for a good outing against a rival and a springboard toward the KHSAA playoffs, which begin the following week.
"Edmonson is a very well-coached, hard-nosed physical team. They are led by #8 Alex Basil and #38 Ty Lee. Basil is a very good quarterback who we must contain when he scrambles," said Emmick. "We have to be prepared for play-action as they do a great job getting backs into the flats to stretch the defense."
The Bears' defense must be ready for a variety of offensive formations.
"Edmonson will vary between the Power I and Spread. They like to get the ball into Basil's and Lee’s hands several different ways. Lee is a hard runner. We must be ready for their various formations and make adjustments to them," said Emmick. "Nathanial Lamar (#75) is a strong offensive lineman that they like to run behind. Our defensive line must step up to the challenge this week and control the line of scrimmage."
According to Emmick, Edmonson is a traditional "3-4 cover 2 team" defensively. "They will roll safeties late to give a cover three. They are big and physical up front. We have to win the war in the trenches to be successful," the coach added.
Although Coach Emmick and the Bears are squarely focused on tonight's game, the upcoming playoffs are still on the horizon.
"This game sets the tone for the playoffs. For us, the playoff run begins now. We have to continue with the mentality we have found the past few weeks and continue to attack in all three phases of the game. We have to get off the bus ready to play football," said Emmick.
Butler and Edmonson will kick-off at 7 p.m. at the school in Brownsville. The game will be aired live on WLBQ 1570 AM and streamed on Beech Tree News (www.beechtreenews.com). Mark Allen and coach Cody Donaldson will have the call.
