Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Needed for School District Opportunity for Butler County Farmers

The Butler County School District is interested in working with local farmers to purchase fruits and vegetables for school lunches and breakfast.  The “Farm to School” program is being developed here in Butler County.  There will be an informational meeting for interested growers with Kaitlin Harrison, director of the school food program, on Thursday, February 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Butler County Extension Office.  During the meeting we will discuss what the school wants to buy, amounts needed, delivery schedules, and other factors to develop partnerships between the school district and local farms.  This is an ongoing project, but it is not time for farms to be making plans for the 2017 growing season.  Any interested farmer should make plans to attend.  The school is ready to purchase fruits and vegetables now, so if someone has something to sell that could be used in school lunches we could get started right away.  Most farms would need to do some planning and produce for the future.

For more information, contact the Butler County Extension Office at 112 E GL Smith Street, Morgantown, or call 270-526-3767.
