FOOTBALL: BCMS Bears off to fast start with several wins

Butler County Middle School Football opened the first week of season with three games in six days.  The Bears season opener was a home game with McLean County.  Both 7th and 8th grade teams came out hot and pulled off wins in dominating fashion.  The 8th grade team finished with a score of 38-0.  A strong showing by the Bears’ defense prevented the Cougars from getting on the scoreboard.  The Bears’ offense included a balanced attack in the air and on the ground.  They scored on their first five possessions of the game, which included a 50-yard pass completion from quarterback Jagger Henderson to Brody Hunt on the second possession of the game.

The 7th grade team won with a score of 32-0.  Defense is the strong suit for the 7th grade team as well, but that did not stop them from putting points on the scoreboard.  The offense got off to somewhat of a slow start due to incurring penalties, but a run from William Jones from the Bears’ own territory jump started the offense.  The Bears went on to score with touchdowns from Landon Phelps, William Jones, Colton Dunnells, and Ty Price.

Coach Elijah Flener said, “I am pleased with both teams’ performances overall, especially our defense.  We definitely have things to work on to make us better.”

On Saturday, the Bears traveled to Rhea Stadium in Russellville to square off against Logan County.  Even though the games were considered scrimmages, the Bears went ready to play.  The 8th grade team came away with another victory.  The score was 28-8.  Solomon Flener, Jagger Henderson, and Alex Elmore all scored touchdowns for the Bears.

The 7th grade team came out strong with a rushing touchdown by William Jones on their first possession of the game, but were unable to get the two point conversion or put together another successful set of downs to score again.  Their defense remained tough and only allowed for one Logan County touchdown as well, but the Cougars were able to convert on their extra points and won the game 8-6.

On Tuesday night, the Bears traveled to Muhlenberg South Middle School to face the Mustangs.  Both 7th and 8th grade teams had successful first halves, putting up numbers on the scoreboard.  On the first offensive play, Alex Elmore ran for a 62 yard touchdown.   Brody Hunt was on fire for the Bears and put up 20 first half points with two receiving touchdowns and an interception returned for a touchdown, giving the Bears a 28-0 lead at halftime.  Due to a running clock the Bears didn’t possess the ball much during the second half so they ended with a final score of 28-8.

The 7th grade team started out a little sluggish offensively but warmed up before halftime, getting two touchdowns within a span of 38 seconds.  The 7th grade team won with a score of 20-6; however, it didn’t come without a price.  Colton Dunnells was injured during the first half of the game and will be out the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.

The Bears game Tuesday night, August 22, at home against Hancock County was cancelled due to the threat of severe weather.
