Folk Festival Held at MES

On Monday November 26, the 1st Annual Kentuckian Folk Festival was held at Morgantown Elementary School. The all day event consisted of multiple presentations and displays. The event was organized by Diana Flener.

"All this would not have been possible without the planning assistance of the Green River Chapter of the D.A.R. and also the presentations from our local craftsmen," said Flener.

Some of the folk artists present were musicians Doug Lindsey and Roy Hogan performing music.  Many others were also present to present crochet, fashion, cookware, literature and lifestyle. Among the artists and presentations were Diana Flener, Linda Hawkins, Charlotte Hunt, Suzanne Renfrow, Jana Rose, Malisa Hunter, Doug Lindsey, Roy Hogan, Brenda Longhoffer, and Joyce Creager.

Among the displays were toys, whittling, tatting, quilting, pioneer animals, soap making, embroidery, basket weaving, and knitting. Along with this, the 3rd grade students built replicas of native American housing out of various materials including straw, leaves, tree bark, and animal fur.

The folk festival exposed the students to the knowledge of past and present techniques in many catagories. the interesting presentations guided the students through the processes and displayed the amount of time and effort that can go into folk art and crafts.
