Flag Day Ceremony held at courthouse

Allison Clark, Amy Smith-Thomas, and Kane Gott

The Butler County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held their annual Flag Day Program on June 14th on the Butler County Courthouse lawn.

Lynda O'Driscoll, Flag Chair, welcomed a large crowd to the event.  Kane Gott, led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.  Allison Clark shared a reading and introduced speaker Amy Smith-Thomas, Butler County Middle School teacher.
Smith-Thomas asked, "Have you ever stepped back and truly given thanks to your country, our veterans, those currently serving and our United States Flag?"
She continued by sharing history of flag day and interesting facts about the flag.
"The design has changed 27 times," she said.
"The man credited with designing the current 50 star American Flag was Robert G. Heft.  He was 17-years old at the time and created the design in 1958 as a high school class project while living with his grandparents in Ohio.  He received a B- on the project but later received an A once it was submitted to Congress and accepted by President Eisenhower."
" There are six American Flags on the moon," said Smith-Thomas
In closing, Smith-Thomas added, "I hope you have been inspired to add our flag, our veterans, those currently serving, and our country to the many things you are thankful for each day."

The Sons of the American Revolution Chapter presented Butler County Judge-Execuetive David Fields with a certificated for correctly displaying the flag in the courthouse lawn.
Georgia Romans closed in prayer.
