FISCAL COURT: County moves forward on broadband agreement

Corps of Engineers has safety concerns with Woodbury Dam

Butler County Fiscal Court meet on Monday, September 26, at the courthouse. All magistrates were present: Stevie Givens, Kevin Phelps, Timmy Givens, David Whittinghill, and Dillon Bryant.

The Court started with a closed session to review applications for the county road department. Magistrates decided to schedule interviews with both applicants.

Magistrates approved a $2,800 bid from David Lewis to paint the Rochester Ferry House and also approved litter abatement payments to the Butler County Schools $500 and $500, Salem Baptist Church $598, Belmont Church $510, and Butler County NSDARC $479.40.

The Court reviewed an agreement with Warren Rural Electric and NTCT Broadband. The cost to the county is $1.5 million. The agreement asks for 25 percent to be paid 60 days after the signing and 100 percent paid when 75 percent of the job is completed. Magistrate Dillon Bryant questioned the payment plan. Butler County Attorney Dick Deye said the company wanted 100 percent up front, and he and Judge/Executive Tim Flener negotiated the new terms.

Magistrate David Whittinghill asked if the county could get free internet for the volunteer fire departments, ambulance , and dispatch. Ultimately, Court approved the agreement on a 5-0 vote and asked Judge Flener to share their concerns and questions.

Judge Flener told the Court that the Corp of Engineers is coming to Butler County to discuss safety concerns at the Woodbury Dam. He also said he received a call from Monroe County about a tug boat they want to get rid of but that it has some issues.

Magistrates will participate in a fun trap shoot with the 4-H Shooter on October 18 at 4:00 p.m. at the Conservation Club.

The Court approved the following:

—Transfer $10,000 from General Fund to E-911

—Transfer $35,000 from General Fund to —Jail Fund

—Bills and transfers

The Butler County Properties Corporation (all members of the Butler County Fiscal Court) met following the Fiscal Court meeting. Chairman Dillon Bryant called the meeting to order. After approving the minutes from the August 22 meeting, the group approved having the property for the new judicial center surveyed. In closing, they approved the monthly treasurer's settlement.
