Fight leads to charges for students

A fight between juveniles at the Butler County High School Athletic Fieldhouse has led to charges being filed on three Butler County students, and has prompted changes to some school policies.

The charges stem from an incident which occurred on the afternoon of Monday, April 29th. The students involved told their bus driver that they were to be let off the bus at the BCHS Athletic Training Facility, the field house. Once at the fieldhouse the students entered, and two of them became involved in a fight, while the third student recorded the incident on a cell phone. The parents of one of the students involved contacted the Butler County Sheriff’s Office concerning the fight and the circulation of the recording of the incident.

The students involved in the fight were charged with 4th Degree Assault. In this case it was decided to file charges on the individual that recorded the fight after officers met with Butler County Attorney Richard "Dick" Deye about the case. After viewing the video, Deye decided to bring a charge of Disorderly Conduct on the student because it was decided that the student not only recorded the fight, but also helped to instigate the incident.

According to Butler County Schools Superintendent Scott Howard, changes will be made to try and prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.  Howard said that additional security cameras would be installed at the fieldhouse, and that in the future the facility would never be left unlocked and unsupervised. There were no school officials at the fieldhouse on the afternoon of the incident.
