Felty, McKinney recognized at May Board of Education meeting

Alecia McKinney and Kyle Cassady, Leading to Learn Coordinator at GRREC, was on hand to present the awards.

The Butler County School Board met in regular session Tuesday evening at Butler County High School.

The board approved the minutes of the April 19 regular meeting and April 23 special called meeting.

Treasurer Eric Elms reported the beginning cash balance for April 2016 was $1,869,948.05; Receipts for April: $1,830,110.59; Expenditures for April: $1,572,975.57; Ending balance: $2,127,083.70.

Superintendent Scott Howard added an item to the agenda, an approval of a Dec. 2016 Morgantown Elementary Archery trip.

Jimmy Felty

At the meeting, Alecia McKinney and Jimmy Felty were awarded for their participation in the Aspiring Principals Training at Harvard University.  They are participating in the Leading to Learn Grant, a federal grant coordinated by GRREC (Green River Regional Educational Cooperative) that encourages educators to pursue a principalship certificate by helping with tuition and providing professional learning experiences necessary to become effective administrators.  Kyle Cassady, Leading to Learn Coordinator at GRREC, was on hand to present the awards.

Cassady has been involved with the Leading to Learn grant for the past three years, serving as project director.

"Both Ms. McKinney and Mr. Felty began their coursework at Western Kentucky University in the Fall of 2015," Cassady said. "They hope to finish this coursework in December, 2016.  During these 18 months of intensive training, they have been able to network with other students who are pursing Principal Certification.  Each has a mentor with administrative experience who has helped to guide their work, they have been able to shadow seated principals in similar schools, and perhaps the most valuable experience was their time spent at Harvard University back in March, 2016, when they attended the Aspiring Principals’ training.  During this time, they sat in Harvard’s classrooms and heard from the best and brightest minds from all across the country.  Most people who have gone to this training say 'It is the best that they have ever attended'.

All of this is made possible through the Leading to Learn grant.  Not only do the students have a large portion of their tuition paid by the grant, Butler County Schools will benefit as well.  They will have two more highly qualified individuals who will be ready and able to assume leadership roles when the time comes.

Superintendent Scott Howard delivered his superintendent’s report, noting his gratitude for Morgantown’s McDonald’s location donating $1,000 to the Leader In Me Program.

Robert Tuck discussed the results of a survey that polled parents and teachers on Non-Traditional Instructional Days and snow routes. Only 51% of the surveys were returned from parents, Tuck said.
