Extension Celebrates 100 Years of Financial Management

For the past 100 years, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service has been about the business of improving the lives of families through educational programs in financial management. Beginning in 1914, home demonstration agents taught homemaking, resource management and food preservation. In the 1940’s agents had a tremendous impact on family economics, helping people save on home food production, food preservation, repurposing of clothing and reconditioning of furnishings.
Just as home demonstration agents responded to economic needs created by World War II, the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and Cooperative Extension Service launched the Managing in Touch Times (MITT) initiative in 2010 in response to consequences created by another period of recession. The MITT initiative focuses on increased household savings and debt reduction as a solution to the debt problems many consumers face. Many Kentucky families were unprepared to manage in the rapidly changing economic conditions. In 2013, participants reported:
•    80,216 received the monthly MITT MoneyWi$e newsletter.
•    21,659 increased awareness of how to manage household, farm or business income.
•    20,946 identified financial management strategies or experienced increased confidence in financial matters.
•    14,040 indicated they valued the program and information received.
