EDITORIAL: Bright spots in a bleak year

No doubt 2020 will be remembered in history as one of the more challenging years in American history, or even world history for that matter.  COVID-19, its spread, government responses, economic distress, and an education system struggling are some of the difficulties this global pandemic has wrought on communities across the county - and that includes ours.

But, there are bright spots.  Two of those bear mentioning:  the WLBQ Radiothon for Morgantown Mission and the Boys and Girls Club Radio Auction.  We were fortunate to be involved in both endeavors as Beech Tree News and WLBQ share some degree of commown ownership.

These two local organizations provide vital services for our community.  The former is continually reaching out in various ways to help our neighbors who are less fortunate or who are struggling; the latter in stepping in and filling a much-needed gap in the lives and character development of kids.  Both goals are admirable and both entities do a good job in meeting those needs. In addition to the countless hours of work dedicated by many volunteers, money is also a necessity. This is where the community steps up in a big way every year.

The WLBQ/Morgantown Mission Radiothon raised over $18,000  to help the mission provide holiday meal baskets to families who need them.  That money will translate to over 600 meals.  Meanwhile, the Boys and Girls Club Radio Auction raised $13,637 to help it carry out its mission of serving kids.

Individuals, families, businesses, churches, groups, and other organizations - in the midst of a pandemic - reached deep into their pockets and provided funding for these two worthwhile organizations.  For many of the folks who participated in these two events, they likely did so at a time that may not have been the best for them to do so, economically speaking.  That makes it even more special.  That is what makes this community work.  We are proud to be a part of it.
