Don Locke: Looking Thru Bifocals....

Notes to myself; some otherwise.
It’s good to remember, time and again how much one can lose and how much we can surrender voluntary without being the poorer for it. (Margot Benary Isbert- The Vintage Years)
Lord, remind me at my age I cannot go-up against Hell with a bucket of water, but I can brighten the corner where I am- prayers, a note or phone call to a friend, not to given an organ recital about my own ills, but to ask of his /her well-being.
Lord, make us aware to let go, abandon covetousness, clinging to status, to success and habits; to house and home and possessions.  Let us know the desire for having and holding is one of the most persistent traits of human nature.  Job’s hand did not cling to his riches in plenty.  Therefore he had no difficulty releasing them in poverty. To cling to stuff is vanity.
Once for my birthday I received a nice, new, pocket knife.  Not long after I saw a fellow having trouble starting his car.  The starter would only make a clicking sound.  I went over with my brand new pocket knife, removed the cable clamps from the posts and began scraping the oxidation build –up from inside the clamps and around the battery posts.
“You’re going to ruin your good knife,” he said.
“A good knife isn’t worth much if you can’t use it for something useful,” I answered.
We put his battery cable back on; the car started right-up, he thanked me.
Now, had I thought, “I know what’s wrong but I’m not about to dull my new knife,” I would have missed the blessing of helping a person in need.  I was the better for it.
I didn’t broadcast my good deed.  I only mention it here to make a point.
Frank Hightower, an old friend of mine back where I grew up, was fond of saying, “ You do something good for somebody and go out an blab it you lose your blessing.”
Old sayin… “On him who wants himself to glitter, no light shines.”
On a less ponderous note: New on TV- “The Return of the Dead”- I thought this would only happen at the RAPTURE.
Have you seen the new Lone Ranger movie on TV?  It’s not very flattering regarding the timeless hero.  First, they have him dressed in a silly looking suit, not cowboy.  Then they make him out as a selfish coward.  One scene where he and his faithful side-kick, Tonto, are buried up to their necks by bad guys, the Lone Ranger gets lose with the help of his horse Silver.  He rides off and leaves Tonto still buried.
I’m told the movie is a spoof.  The Lone Ranger is no spoof.  Not good. Not the Lone Ranger I knew in my first coloring book and on his radio show before TV.  The radio show featured Brace Beemer as the hero.  Brace later died in a car wreck.  Clayton Moore played the “Masked Man” on TV.
Kindest regards…
