Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

‘Does and Ats’ -I read somewhere that women are primarily responsible for leadership in this country. That’s probably close to the truth. Actress Sadie Itahn said one time she didn’t like President Ford. “Why?” she was asked. “I didn’t like his buns”, she said.
Ronald Reagan was handsome, he was elected president. Bill Clinton was thought to be handsome- women liked him. He liked them too.
I’m careful anymore to whom I lend books; I still do on occasion.
Then sometimes when I see the person they’ll say “I’ve just about got that book read all the way through.” I want to say, “ you don’t read through it. That’s not the purpose of a book. You savor it – you underline, you reread to think about what you have read. You digest it slowly, like a good meal. You don’t gobble it down.”
-This brings me back to my growing up years; to an older couple – Morton and Loshie, who lived in our neighborhood. They had great grandchildren…both in their late 60s or early early 70s; past child-bearing years- at least Loshie saw it that way. Morton didn’t see it that way. His thought was, what was over employed for procreation should later be used for recreation. He had snow on the roof and a little spark left in the furnace.
Loshie’s spark had gone out. They still slept in the same bed, but it was strictly a platonic relationship. Loshie meant to keep it that way. She slept in a pair of Morton’s pants turned around backwards! Sort of a do-it-yourself chastity belt I guess.
Their son-in-law was my daddy’s cousin. He verified this arrangement.
Little wonder, by his own admission, before he went out to push a paint brush all day, Morton arose early and had a shot of Early Times before breakfast.
-Unless a person, it’s said, has talents and a will to be something, freedom of choice is an irksome burden. It’s easier to get into the wagon and let others pull it.
Kindest regards.
