Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Nothing serious, just meandering: I’ve ever had a leisure suit, a gold neck chain, a decent set of jumper cables, or a sailboat.  The only one of theses that sort of grieves me is the sailboat, but at 80 now, I’m resigned to the fact I’ll probably never hoist mainsail or makefast the job (that’s salt talk I learned from two hours of instruction in sailing once). Besides I only have a couple of farm ponds close- not enough to catch a good wind I guess.
We all had and have pipe-dreams about after retirement.  The sailboat was one; the other of mine was a gentle ole horse and a one-hors wagon to drive- coming from no place, going nowhere, but no to be.
About the time I hung it up a “droop” hit me.  I had doctors reaching in from both directions and shaking hands in the middle; they came up with nothing, that’s when all of them wanted to send me to a shrink.  When doctors don’t know, they holler “shrink.”
Anyway, after grappling with this ten years or so they finally agreed to agreed to call it “fatigue syndrome.”  They wouldn’t call it “chronic fatigue syndrome”, they didn’t believe in that, maybe they still don’t, I can’t say.
Well, enough about my sickly years. As a freshman octogenarian I have good days, and some just tolerable but, again who don’t? Life is good: I still enjoy good conservation, a good cup of coffee and Gunsmoke.  I have a good wife, standing behind me keeping me on the rails, and a wonderful family.
A few NO-No’s and YES-YESES:
Never nudge a snapping turtle in the backside with your foot.  They can do a VERY QUICK 180-degree turn in mid-air.
Never argue with a woman.  You can’t win.  They have their own set of rules.
If a woman asks you how she looks never say “fine”… and don’t ask me, I don’t know either.
People are more important than the pursuit of fame or fortune.  TAKE TIME FOR THEM.
Church folks, don’t get so busy working for God that you forget to worship him.
Avoid snap- judgment about folks.  They may turn out to be good friends.  I know.
Need little to be contented.  The thirst of want is never quenched,  Singer, Dottie West, said it so remarkably well in a song- part of which goes-… “I’m happy with the simple things, a Saturday-night dance, a bottle of Coke, and the song that the bluebird sings.”  Dottie left us too soon.
Try to hit a lick when you can…
Kindest regards……..
