Don Locke; Lookin Thru Bifocals

Code of Conspiracies:

My best aunt Onie Naffsings was my grandmother Locke’s Sister.( They were both Vicks.) I guess her given first name was Leona. Aunt Onie and uncle John Naffsings ran a very large country store- the only one in the community. They sold gasoline, clothes; shoes, feed- you name it. A pair of new overalls was $0.98. Coal oil was $0.15 a gallon. A knee- high orange pop was $0.05. A cured ham was $1.00. $3.00 would buy a pair of work shoes. After years in the business, they sold the store and moved into town (Greenville). Aunt Onie sort of took on an up- town personna. She and uncle John joined the First Baptist Church and the country cluts. Aunt Onie went to the beauty shop once a week- she gave up dipping. But not tobacco altogether. Here is where she engaged in a code. It was called, “MC''. Back then folks could call in their groceries and have them delivered to them. Here is where she used the code, She gave her grocery list. The last item on the list was always “ one MC.”- Mammoth Cave Chewing Tobacco.

Kindest Regards...
