Don Locke; Lookin Thru Bifocals

To put this in perspective, I was 12 years old when World War II ended. I am 87 now. Of those I recall, here are some that took-up their new lives after the World War… in no particular order.

Don Potter opened a jewelry shop. “a little quitter and less nerve- racking then piloting a b-17 bomber in combat over Germany”, he would say.

Bill Stokes flew c-47 troop carrier into danger, dropping pura troopers and towing gliders. When he came home, he took a job driving a milk delivery truck-door -to-door. “Piloting a milk truck was safer,” he said.

Bill Clark, a b-17 bomber pilot, became a medical doctor. He was cited on national news for bringing home a shot-up bomber on two engines. The B-17 had 4 engines. A Presbyterian pastor at Greenberg flew b-17s in combat. He told an interesting thing: he said when they saw an enemy plane go down, they radioed the location to the Germans. “They did the name for us,” he said. Coming in on a wing and a prayer.”

Kindest Regards…
