Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Bible stories: here is one. In 2 kings 5, we find the story of Naaman, The commander-in-chief of the Syrian army. The king of Syria had a high regard for Naaman; had led his troops in many glorious victories- a great hero. But he was a leper.

The Syrians had invaded the land of Israel. Among their captees was a little girl who had been given to Naaman’s wife as a handmaiden.

One day the little girl told the mistress, “I wish my master would go see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy!” When the prophet, Elisha, in Samaria, head of Naaman plight, he sent a message to his own being in Israel: “send Naaman to me, and he will learn that there is true prophet of sod here in Israel.” So, when Naaman arrived at Elisha’s home, Elisha sent this message out to Naaman; “So and wash in the Gordon river seven times and you will be healed of every trace of leprosy!”

Naaman stomped away mad- his pride hurt: “I thought the prophet a least would come out and meet me, instead he told me to go wash in the Gordon River seven times.”

“Our river in Damascus are better than all the Israel’s rivers put together. If it is rivers I need, I’ll go home and wash to rid myself of leprosy.”

Naaman’s officer tried to reason with him: “If the prophet had told you to do some difficult thing, wouldn’t you have done it?”

Finally, Naaman overcame his pride and went down to the Gordon and washed himself seven times, and his flesh became as healthy as a child’s.

Naaman said, “I know now at least there is no other GOD in all the world except in Israel.”

Kindest Regards…
