Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Someone opined that fanatics come from the ranks of the non-creative people of words.

The man who wants to write a great book; paint a great picture, create an architectural masterpiece, become a great scientist; he knows that never in this world will he be able to realize this.  His innermost desire can find no peace.  He sees the world always out of joint.  He is not likely to become a fanatic.

Most of Germany’s Nazi bigwigs had artistic and literary ambitions, which they could not realize: Hitler tried painting and architecture; Goebbels tried drama, novel writing, and poetry; Rosenberg, architecture and philosophy; Von Schirach, poetry; Funk, music.  Almost all were a failure because of their lack of talent.  Hitler ate out of garbage cans and picked up clothes when he was a starving artist.

Only a German Army Corporal in World War I, Hitler wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer on military tactics.  Perhaps his greatest general was Rommel.  Hitler had him killed.  P.S. Hitler told Rommel — “If you do not take poison and kill yourself, I will have your wife and children shot.”  Rommel elected suicide.  Hitler suspected Rommel was in on a plot to kill him (Hitler).  This turned out to be false.  He (Hitler) knew diddly squat about running a million-man army.  His ranking Nazi officers were afraid of him.  Once a Nazi Corps Commander retreated when Russian troops were about to wipe him out.  Hitler had him shot.

Writer Eric Hoffer said one time, “How could the German people as smart and intelligent as they were, and still are, fall for such a lunatic as Adolf Hitler?”

This I think I have used before; however it can stand repeating — concerning today’s education.

A college history student, after a study of World War II was asked on a test: “Describe the downfall and defeat of Nazi Germany at the end of World War II.

The girl wrote: “Hitler went to his underground hideout underneath Berlin, and shot himself in the bonkers. (Did she mean to say bunker?)

Kindest regards...
