Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

It’s called a Go-Hey!  This is an apparatus with a bunch of fingers mounted and attached to a handle.

When your car slips its wobbling chain off its grizzleblick, and the tail light starts pumpin’ oil, and the engine goes deader than a door nail, you just hold this “Go-Hey!” up in front of your car’s dash-board.  It is designed to punch all the buttons and switches at the same time.

Three easy payments.

What about these so-called Super Beats we see advertised on TV?  They make us, “Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound,” like Superman did. Their latest ad promises - “30-day sample FREE of charge,” the disclaimer follows in almost microscopic letters,.. “With first order.”  We have to watch disclaimers.

Also scams over the phone.  A few days ago my wife got a call promising a brand new car and a million dollars besides.  The male voice said, “We need for you to send us one hundred and fifty dollars to process your prize.”

The dead give-away is, if they want money up front.  Be aware.  My wife hung up.  Scam people prey on old people.  My mother was up in her nineties when a so-called telephone company called:  “We want to send you a new telephone.  It will only cost you five dollars.”  Now mother had a good phone, with large letters on the buttons, an extra-loud switch, and etc.  But like a lot of older people she jumped at the chance and sent them five dollars.

They sent her a piece of junk.  Mother was from the old school of honesty; she thought everybody was honest.  We sent the phone back with a threat.  They gave her the money back.

Burl Ives was one of my favorite singers and entertainers--also a dine actor; Burl was given an Oscar for the movie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, also starring Elizabeth Taylor.

I have one of his songs on album titled, They’ll Do Anything for Money.  It’s about a “blind” beggar who stood on a street corner in dark glasses, with cup and cane; begging for money.  At day’s end he would walk about a block feeling with his cane to a back-street where a new car was parked.  He then opened the car door, threw the glasses, cup, and cane into the back seat, and drove away in his new car.

Kindest regards…
