Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Once a sleepy head—always a sleepy head.  I heard somewhere when you get older it becomes easier to arise.  Not so, the warm covers are still hard to leave.  The dread is awful.

But the bathroom beacons.  So, with much trepidation and groaning, I shut my eyes, grit my teeth and throw off the covers.  I grab my cap, and my walking stick and make my way to the smallest room in the house.  When I return I must lick my calf over.  I have forgotten my empty water bottle, with which I take my pills.  I don’t suppose I take any more pills than most folks at eighty-five.  Oh well, I’ve come to think forgetfulness helps with needed exercises.  Why else?

I return with a full water bottle; get dressed, pulling on old socks, I have new socks, thick ones; but they are harder to get on…more pulling.  Pulling is difficult anymore, old socks go on easier.  I hunt for easy things now…no strain, no pain.

I put on my knee brace, sit on the bedside and do my twenty-five sit overs…helps a sore back—I take my pills and my morning insulin shot; by this time first wife Beth needs breakfast.  Her breakfast consists of:  banana, grapes, fruit bar, and milk.  Mine is usually the same—sometimes I eat leftover pizza.

After giving the front porch flowers their morning drink, and letting the cat in, I settle down with a cup of day-old coffee (from the microwave), to one of my favorite TV movies:  Heaven Knows Mister Allison, featuring Robert Mitchum and Debora Karr.

The movie is about a U.S. Marine and a Catholic nun, stranded on a Japanese held, Pacific island, during World War II.  There is no hanky-panky between them, however Mitchum falls in love with her and begs her to renounce her vows and marry him.  She said no, despite the fact she had deep feelings for him.

When the picture ended and they were rescued, she told him, “Wherever I go; whatever I do, you will always be my dear companion.”

Sad.  I had tears.

Life is still good…even day-old coffee.

Kindest regards…
