Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Celebrities and Heroes- What did Audie Murphy, Roy Rogers and Roy Acuff have in common?

For starters they were all three small, bright men. In addition, they all three could and would fight Roy Rogers on and off screen -  the same for Audie Murphy.

Roy Acuff was a country singer. Roy Rogers a cowboy singer-actor.  Audie Murphy a cowboy-actor in the most decorated soldier of World War II - including the Congressional Medal of Honor.  Roy Acuff weighed less than 150 lbs. One night, two thugs try to rob him in the parking lot of the Grand Ole Opry. Bad mistake. Acuff almost killed both of them. Roy Acuff was a boxer in his younger years.

Roy Rogers and his wife Dale Evans were eating in a Hollywood restaurant when the ya-hoo came in and picked a fight with Roy. "You can fight in the movies, can you really fight?" Roy not only threw the loud mouth out the front door, Roy THREW him through the front door. Roy could "really" fight.

Audie Murphy was on a Los Angeles freeway when he saw these three hard hat (steelworkers) try to run an old lady off the road. Audi pulled them over to the side of the freeway and put them in the hospital - ALL THREE... kneading patched up pretty good... broke them from sucking eggs ...

Audie Murphy (the late) had a connection to Morgantown, Kentucky. Most of you remember Austin (Hike) Vance. Audie was Hike's Company Commander in Europe in World War II. When Hike was wounded, Captain Murphy was one of the first people who showed up at Heights hospital bedside.

Hike said "the little guy never got any sleep," He was always busy checking on his soldiers all through the night - every night.  I don't reckon country Entertainer Hank Snow would fight you - he would cuss you.

Hanks one time on the Grand Ole Opry was in the middle of a song and his fiddle player was standing too close; he hooked the end of his bow under Hanks wig and pulled it off and it hit the floor. Hank stopped his song. Over the microphone and the house speakers Hank broadcast loud and clear- "YOU SOB"! (He didn't spell it.)

"That big eight wheel rolling down the track means your true-lovein daddy ain't comin' back-he's MOVIN ON..."

Kindest Regards
