Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

In the Old Testament, Job wrote: “man is of few days and full of trouble.”

Since then we have extended, somewhat, our days by way of medicines, but we haven’t been able to eradicate trouble-and won’t until the Lord returns. Before miracle drugs such as antibiotics, mineral spas gained importance all over, for the healing of certain diseases; through the “powerfully tonie” mineral water.

In our area we had Dawson Springs, Diamond Springs in Logan County, and Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. At one time Red Boiling Springs boasted of four or five hotels in that small town. One or two of the old hotels were still there twenty or so years ago when I was there. One had been converted into a mice dining facility.

Of course there were Hot Springs and Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Just across the line in Texarkana’s in north east Texas was the town of Dalby Springs, Texas. The mineral spas there were several in numbers: Great Red Springs, Salt Spring, and Black and White Sulphur Wells. The one having the greatest popularity was known as Headache Springs.

All three in Dalby had earned an unrivalled reputation for the cure of: “Dyespesia (in all forms), Dropsy (both local and general), Paralysis, Enlargement of the spleen and liver, Scrofula, Gravel, Constipation, Kidney and Genito-Urinary Diseases: all diseases peculiar to females.”

Dalby Springs testimonials:

“I had Gravel often years standing. After three months at Dalby I was entirely cured. The last months at Dalby I was entirely cured. The last month of my stay I gained thirty six pounds. “I was unable to stand. I had tried other watering places. I went to Dalby Springs. I had to be hauled there in a hack. I stayed six weeks and was entirely cured. Andrew Dodge, 107 years old of Bowie County: “I’ve drunk from Black and Water Spring most of my life. Keeps me frolicky. Until recently I rode horse back and still possum hunted.”

“Delicate ladies and sickly children can resort to the waters of Dalby Springs with the assurance that health and vigor will be obtained. At Dalby Springs there is not a single case on record of failure to cure.”

Keep well.

Kindest regards…..
