Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals
Some say a FAD becomes a TREND after ten years. This may all be well and good, but it begs the question: How long is a TREND?
The dictionary is vague on the length of a trend. I don’t know, for instance, how long the yo-yo has been around. I do know once when I was a lad, there for some reason, was a run on yo-yos at my daddy’s store. That was at least 75 years ago. Everybody from older men to teenagers, to kids, had a yo-yo. It kept my daddy busy running to the wholesale house-stocking up on yo-yos. I don’t recall how long the rush for yo-yos lasted; it finally died-down. But we still have yo-yos today. However, I’d say the yo-yo isn’t as popular as the FRISBIE now.
The dictionary puts it that a trend is: to have a tendency toward events conditions and options-a vague, current style as in fashions. I suppose trends vary in durations. After world-war II, crew cuts (hair) on men were popular; they lasted several years. This style no doubt was a carryover of the G.I. haircut. Back when I was a kid, the word was if you saw a person with any size tattoo, you could say he had been drunk at least once in his life. Not so today. Both men and woman get their bodies virtually covered in tattoos. Gross. You can say for certain the tattoo trend will last a long time-THEY WON’T COME OFF!
I’m hoping the shaved-head trend won’t last as long…. Along with men’s butt-suite, that don’t cover the backside; bangs on old men; backward caps; pony tails on any male, and sloppy necktie knots-punk-rocker style. I want to say to some: Turn your cap around, pull up your pants & get a job.
At 83, there are a few of my hang-ups. You notice I haven’t mentioned women’s fashions. I wouldn’t touch that with a ten-foot-pole…. With the exception of tattoos.
Kindest regards……
