Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals
More dribs and drabs; or is it dibs and dabs?
Custser lost the battle of the Little Big Horn because he was outgunned. The U.S. Cavalry had one-shot, breach loading rifle. The Sioux Indians had 16-shot Henry repeating rifles.. lever action. That's 16 to 1, if my ratio and preportion serves me correctly. We're told that the military at that time could not afford the 16-shot Henrys.
Writer Arthur Koestler in the Lotus and the Robot describes the Hinder leader Vinoba Bhave: His diet consisted of small cups of curds and molasses taken every three or fours oours, a total of 1,100 calories a day. Yet his body was all muscle and sinew, his skin had a healthy glow, his gestures were vigorous, and on the march he could outpace any of his younger disciples. (comment mine): I have no problem with my pace being slower than Vinoba's-I like beans, potatoes,
and cornbread.. with turnips on the side.
Speaking of a slower pace, Dwight D. Eisenhower: Supreme Allied Commander in Europe in World War II; former president of the U.S.; former president of a large university; former executive of a adding machine company; was asked what he would do when he retired for good, "I'm going to sit in my rocking chair or my front pourch on my Pennsylvania farm. And after about a month, I may start to rock a little", he replied.
Somone said it is much easier to love humanity as a whole than to love one's neighbor. We once lived in Texas. I loved Texans-but not a 100% of them maybe. Once Jesus was asked the question, who is my neighbor? He answered with this
parable: "A certain man from Jerusalem went to Jerico, and fell among theives. They stripped off his clothing, wounded him and left him for dead." A certain priest (a holy man) came down the road; seeing him (wounded man) passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite (a ruler in the Jewish Temple) did the same. "But a certain Samaritan.. came where the (wounded) man was; bandaged his wounds; doctored them with oil and wine; took him to an inn, and took care of him. He left with the inn keeper to care for him, leaving money for the man's care (two denarii, about a day's wages). The Sammaritan then told the inn keeper, "Take care of him, whatever more you spend, when I come again I will repay you." What makes this whole situation unusual is the fact the Jews hated the Samaritans. But at least one did not return the hate; insted
he returned love Jesus ended the story with the question, "So which of these three (the priest, the Levite, the Samaritan) was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?" Jesus answered his own question: " He who showed mercy on him-go and do likewise"
Kindest regards...
