Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Say what? The earlier term for the word, Philology, is the term, Linguistics. In simple terms, how people
talk and write.
A coloquialism is a colloquial word (or phrase) of expression.. a localism, or regionalism. Most all of
these vary geographically even down to counties and cities... in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn (N.Y.), they say
" over in Joisey (Jersey)." In parts of Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina, we hear: "Go out to the haose."
In Eastern Kentucky and West Virgina a dandelion is a "dan-dillain;" water cress is "creeses"; in Cebtral Kentucky
we sy, "There's no telling when this rain will stop." The folks in Eastern Kentucky are likely to say, "It's UNTOLD
how much longer this dry spell will last." In the Marion County area (KY)for, "Now you take an ole man like Slim
Killswiggins.." In Marion County it's likely to be, "Now you PUT, and take.." In parts of north Tennessee you'll hear:
"Chicargo" (Chicago). In the Mammoth Cave area (KY) there is a county church named Joppa. Some folks there call it, "Ole
Joppie." In Muhlenberg County you are likely to hear, "that tree is just full of green warnets." (Walnuts) In Hopkins County,
the sir-name, Talifero, is often abbreviated: Toliver.
Across the waters in Britian where, supposedly, they talk in the "Mother Tongue", some expressions are strange to
us in America. Here we go:
        Telephone booth: Call box
        Band Aid: Plaster
        Elevator: Lift
        Car trunk: Boot
        Car hood: Bonnet
        Cookie: Biscuit
Bumper cars at a carnival: Dodgems
        House trailer: Van

When a person is in the hospital, Brits say "In Hospital", omitting the word "the" there is a section of London where they
speak "Cockney". The high-brow Brits call it a common (Low-Brow) accent. In America we say "bison", for buffalo. Cockney: "A bison
is watt you wash you (not your) ands 'een." We say, "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plains. The "cockney": "The rine in spine falls
minely on the plaine." I've gotta pull a Hank Snow.
