Don Locke: Little things that say who we are

Bill Warren was head basketball coach when we came to Butler County in 1963. If you didn’t know bill sometimes, he came across as having a gruff extension. Not so, one had to look inside Bill as with a lot of people.

One of his former players told, recently that Bill knew the home – lives of his players; very often he gave them money. For one of the team members Bill made a place for him to sleep in one of the gym dressing rooms, particularly in cold weather. The kid was from a large family.

Bill Warren was an English major in college- a highly intelligent man. Sometimes in conversation he would make a statement of some do not; then he would joking follow the statement with, “and that entails a lot.”

When I pass where he lived at the edge of town, I see his old cow barn in the back of his house. I am reminded he milked twice a day and pasteurized his own milk for his family. When Bill was in Tokyo in the army, after WWII, he was appointed as an orderly to General Douglas MacArthur. Not many know this.

Bill was most proved of his Baptism as a member of the church of Christ. I like Bill Warren very much.

Kindest Regards…
