DAR Celebrates Constitution Week

The Butler County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated Constitution Week. On Wednesday, September 17 NSDAR kicked off Constitution day with Bells Across America on the courthouse lawn. Following this they made a trip to Morgantown Elementary School to enlighten students regarding the history and traditions associated with the United States of America.

Beginning with a breakdown of the Pledge of Allegiance, the students learned the meaning of each clause within the pledge. They were taught why the pledge of allegiance, the national anthem, and the presentation of colors are conducted in the manner that they are; with no hats, the salute, and the standing at attention.  The students also stood and pledged allegiance to the flag.

The presentation then moved to the activity portion, which involved the students each drawing a properly displayed American flag. The process was broken down into steps to simplify the process to the young artists.

The first step was to create an elongated quadrilateral, subdivided with 10 diagonal lines. A numerical algorithm is then used to mark the appropriate quantities of star placeholders with the letter "M'. Following this step, the "M's" are converted to stars using a series of geometric connections. The intended result is an appropriately laid array of stars, each of which correspond to a state of the country.

Later in the afternoon, 4th and 5th graders participated in a patriotic game in which costumed members of the DAR and SAR presented 3 facts about a historical person or thing. The students, who were divided into numerous groups, were given a brief period of time following each hint to decide the correct answer. One representative from each group was asked to recite the answer for their group. After each group gave their answer, the hint giver would reveal their identity. Each correct answer would award one point to that group. The winning groups received candy and a certificate.

Such patriots as Washington, Molly Corbin, Paul Revere, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abigail Adams, Martha Washington, Sarah Fulton, and Betsy Ross worked the trivia game. Such patriotic articles as the American flag, the Liberty Bell, Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, ink well and quill, and bifocals were also included in the trivia game.
The Butler County Chapter of the NSDAR spent the day reminding the students the importance of the Constitution.
