DAR 2012 Holiday Tour

The home of Becky and Travis Vincent

It is once again time for the Butler County DAR Holiday Tour on Sunday, December 2, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00. One home on the tour is that of Becky and Travis Vincent located at 3199 Carson Bridge Road off US Highway 231 South. This home of approximately 4000 square feet was built by contractor Darrell Sweets during the winter of 2011-2012 and includes two stories and a basement. The main floor of the home is complete with hardwood flooring and is furnished in a primitive style with mostly earth tones. There is an 18 foot fireplace that runs from floor to ceiling in the living room. This will be the first Christmas for the Vincent’s in their new home so they will be beginning some new family traditions. They will include at least two decorated trees, one of which will be complete with many homemade ornaments including strung popcorn. The other tree will be more decorative with possibly a snowman theme as this seems to be a holiday favorite for the Vincent family.  This home should be a family favorite on the tour as they make every effort to include son, Cainan, in all the festivities.

Another home on the DAR tour will be that of Deneatra and Cody Henderson at 234 Johnnie Flener Road. Go 1.6 miles from the caution light at the Crossroads on Highway 79N, then turn left on Possum Hollow Rd and take the 1st right onto Johnnie Flener Rd, it will be the 3rd house. This home has been in Deneatra’s family since it was built nearly 150 years ago by her great-great grandfather, Lucian Flener. Many additions and modifications have been completed since the original home was built, many by the carpenters in the family including her grandfather Hubert Flener. Denetra’s parents did major remodeling after they married in the late 70s adding several modern amenities.  This two story dwelling is now home to Deneatra, Cody and their three children. Their daughter occupies the room that Deneatra grew up in and their two sons have the room that was once occupied by her brother. Christmas time at the Henderson’s is a very festive occasion, with 6 trees decorated throughout the house. The main tree is in the living room, there are trees in each of the bedrooms and yet another in the kitchen. Part of the holiday fun with this household is to see what new theme Deneatra has come up with for decorating her family home. Please join the DAR tour and help support their scholarship fund, at a fee of $2 per home. Van rides will be available from the Festival of Trees location on Main Street.

The other home on the tour this year comes right out of the story, Miracle on 34th Street. It is the very recently vacated home of Carla and Jeff Litten located at 60 Valley View just off Highway 231 south. This 3000 square foot home is built of Western Cedar. The home has 4 bedrooms, 4 baths and a huge recreation room. The home is complete with vaulted ceiling and exposed beams. An expansive deck overlooks a gorgeous pool and a beautifully manicured lawn. I’m sure Kris Kringle himself has been by and selected this house for the next family who is looking for a beautiful country home in which to live, look for the walking cane he might have left behind. Please support the BCDAR Scholarship fund by attending the tour at a fee of $2 per home. Van rides will be available from the Festival of Trees location on Main Street.

Another part of the annual Butler County DAR Holiday Tour this year is the Celebration of Life Exhibit at Smith Funeral Home. Many of the paintings of Floyd Hammers will be on display, including The Clockmaker, and many others. Floyd developed his artistic talent late in life and many in the community have had the privilege of owning one of his prints. His wife Joyce Porter Hammers will be the hostess as you enjoy this beautiful display of his work. This exhibit will be available at no charge.

The last, but by no means the least site on the tour is the Silent Night, Holy Night Nativity Exhibit at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Meadowlark Drive off Logansport Road. Members and friends have on display well over 300 exhibits ranging from wood to glass or fabric. The variety of objects on display will amaze the visitor. One can truly feel the true “Spirit of Christmas” as you and your family tour the exhibit and enjoy the reason for the season. This part of the tour is also available at no charge.

Please join the Butler County DAR on the tour this year and help support their Scholarship fund with a small charge of $2 per home. There will be vans available for those who prefer not to drive the tour route. They will be leaving from the Festival of Trees location in the Don Baker building on Main Street, so tour the trees then take a ride on the tour.
