County sells mall for $50k; magistrates consider constable request; sheriff presents budget

Butler County Fiscal Court met in a called meeting on Tuesday, November 12th, at the Butler County Courthouse. All magistrates were in attendance: Stevie Givens, Kevin Phelps, Timmy Givens, David Whittinghill, and Dillon Bryant.

The court voted to sell the Morgantown Mall to Tim Hack for $50,000. Phelps, Timmy Givens, and Bryant voted to sell, while Stevie Givens and Whittinghill voted nay. The motion passed 3-2.

Second District Constable Dale Willis addressed the court requesting funding for his position. According to Willis, he has bought his vehicle, a uniform, weapon, and tires at the cost of approximately $6,000. The city of Morgantown gave him a radio for his car. Willis directs school traffic in the morning and afternoons at Butler County High School. The school system pays him for his time. Willis asked the court for the $6,000 he has been out and an additional $3,000 for gas and car maintenance. According to Willis, he responds to several calls in the city and county to assist officers.

Butler County has five elected constables who are bonded by the county; however, the position is not funded by the county. No action was taken on Willis' request.

Butler County Sheriff Scottie Ward presented and explained his budget to the court. The budget is $2,000 less than last year. The magistrates will review the budget and ask Ward any questions they have prior to the next meeting.
