County to accept bids for new voting equipment; Rescue Squad to get new truck

Butler County Fiscal Court met in regular session on Monday, November 22, at the courthouse.

The first item was discussing a new truck for the Butler County Rescue Squad. According to Brandon Keown, they can order a 3500 Chevy for $37,135 on the state contract. The bed will cost an additional $9,135 for a total of $46,270. The Court approved the purchase.

Jeremy Harmon from Harp Enterprises gave a demonstration of the new voting machines. He explained all the new features of the scanning machine and the disabled accessible machine. According to Butler County Clerk Sherry Johnson, the State Board of Elections announced $2,200 per precinct for a total of $26,400 toward the new machines. The county already owns two of these machines but would need to purchase 11 scanners, 7 Duo machines, and one printer. The total cost is estimated to be more than $100,000.

The Court voted to place the purchase of new machines out for bids.

Butler County Clerk Sherry Johnson presented her office's 2022 budget to the Court. Projected receipts are $4,079,346.62; disbursements are $3,942,195.65 with excess fees of $137,150.97.

Johnson also set the maximum amount for deputies at $204,000. Magistrates approved both items.

Butler County Sheriff Scottie Ward asked the Court to declare a 2010 Charger as surplus property. Magistrates approved his request.

Ward asked the Court to amend his budget to purchase a Chevy Tahoe for $39,329.70 on state contract. The request was approved.

Ward informed magistrates that he had received a COPS Grant for $125,000. It pays 75% of a deputy's salary and benefits for three years. The county has to agree to employment for five years. The deputy must be a veteran.

Third District Magistrate Timmy Givens made a motion and magistrates approved a request to move Timmy Fishburn from a part-time employee for the road department to full-time because he has his Class A CDL.
