Contested race for Morgantown City Council takes shape

 

Six incumbents and two challengers have brought the race for a seat in Morgantown into focus for November.  The deadline to file for the non-partisan was June 2nd.

All current incumbents have filed for reelection.  They are Russell Givens, Dionne Cannon Merritt, Sharon Johnson, Amy Deweese, Telia Keown, and Michael Gary Jr.  Gary is finishing the term of Dustin Embry, who resigned to take the Code Enforcement Officer position with the City of Morgantown.  

In addition to the incumbents, two additional individuals have also filed for a seat on the 6-member council.  They are Trenton Shain and Janeen Taylor.

Voters in the city will cast ballots in the November 3 General Election.  Voters may vote for up to six candidates.  The top six will be elected and will take office in January.

Morgantown Mayor Billy Phelps in unopposed in the General Election and will begin another term of office in January 2027.
