Christine Bratcher: Creating Blessings, One Stitch At A Time

A few days ago I stopped by the nursing home to see what had happened to the bed shawls I wrote about last time.  I nice young woman named Diane, I didn’t get her last name, took me to Serenity Lane where I saw several on them on the beds of the residents there.  I thought they brightened up the rooms nicely. Diane apologized that more were not out, but they were being washed, good. She told me that the people also enjoyed wrapping up and cuddling in the bed shawls. I am so glad they are living up to their multiple uses.

The chaplain at the Morgantown Care and Rehabilitation Center, Rev. Derek Cain heard us talking and introduced himself. He “for many people struggling with Alzheimer’s/dementia colors can become muted as the disease progresses. Bright, vivid colors are often seen better and provide points of recognition for these Elders.” We made our bed shawls bright, striped and multi-colored. We discovered that the color green is easier to see, so we will start making things using bright green.

I did take a few pictures of the bed shawls that I am sharing here. Remember, knitting, crocheting, and all sorts of interesting things are going on at the Butler County Public Library every Monday from 11am to noon. Stop by anytime.
