Butler County Women Eligible for Free Ovarian Cancer Screening

The UK Markey Cancer Screening Program provides free annual sonographic screenings to women across Kentucky with the goal of detecting cancer early.  When caught early, ovarian cancer is treatable and curable.  Since the program began in 1987, 51,000 participants have received over 365,000 free screenings through the program.

All women over 50 are eligible for the free ovarian cancer screening.  Women over the age of 25, who have a family history of ovarian cancer, are also eligible for the screening.

The chances of having breast cancer are 1 out of 9 over a woman’s life.  The chances of having ovarian cancer are about 7 times lower.  Despite the lower risk, ovarian cancer kills more women than other gynecologic malignancies combined.  Ovarian cancer typically does not show symptoms until the disease is advanced.

The Butler County Homemakers have collaborated with the Markey Cancer Center for years to assist Butler County’s women be screened.  You DO NOT have to be a homemaker to participate.  We have appointments on the following days already set up: November 1st, November 15th, and December 6th.  Participants will leave the Extension Office at 9:30 a.m. and travel to Elizabethtown for screening.  There is no cost to participate.  If you would like to receive a free ovarian cancer screening contact the office at 526-3767, ask for Alecia, and reserve your spot today.
