Butler County overcomes slow start, beats Edmonson County

MORGANTOWN — Butler County overcame a slow start to beat visiting Edmonson County 46-35 in a 12th District girls' basketball game on Friday, Feb. 10.
The win allowed Butler County to earn the number one seed for the 2022-23 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament. Butler County notched its 14th straight district win. 
Edmonson County started strong, outscoring Butler County 11-3 in the first quarter.
But the Lady Bears battled back to lead 21-18 at halftime.
Butler County led 31-30 at the end of the third quarter and finished strong to claim the district win. 
The Lady Bears, under the direction of Coach Lexie Belcher, used a balanced offensive attack to prevail in the key district game. 
Ava Wilson scored a game-high 12 points to lead Butler County to the district win. 
Finishing directly behind Wilson in scoring for the Lady Bears, Jenna Phelps posted 11 points. 
Narrowly missing double figures for Butler County, Bailey Moore netted nine points. 
Aiding Butler County in the district win, Parker Willoughby added six points, Taylor Leach contributed five points, Tinslea Belcher tallied two points and Addison Miller chipped in one point.
Edmonson County didn't feature any scorers in double figures. Annie Kiper (eight points), Cariann Williams (seven points), Callie Webb (six points), Kennadi Swihart (four points), Lily Jane Vincent (four points), Jenna Cook (three points) and Emma White (three points) provided Edmonson County's scoring in the district matchup. 
Butler County is scheduled to visit McLean County on Monday, Feb. 13. Tip-off for the Butler County-McLean County girls' basketball game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Calhoun.
