The Butler County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently celebrated Constitution Week by visiting students at Morgantown Elementary School. The program began with 2nd graders learning the history of the Star Spangled Banner and its origins in our country. This was from 9:55 AM to 10:45 AM.

 Following this was the "Art for Heroes" presentation for the 3rd graders from 12:00 PM to 12:50 PM. This presentation taught the students the appropriate way to render the American flag through various art mediums while retaining the appropriate number of horizontal lines and number of stars. The entries in the Art for Heroes contest are judged by local veterans and there is a large monetary prize for those that win at the high school level.

 From 12:50 PM to 1:40 PM, the 4th graders were given the Buddy Poppy Good Citizen presentation. The Buddy Poppy program can be traced back to the poem "In Flander's Field" written by Col. John McCrae. The poem connects the Red Poppy flower with war times and since then has been a national symbol for war heroes. The Buddy Poppy program in modern times is used as a form of financial assistance for disabled veterans, living in VA hospitals and domiciliaries who are paid for their time in making Red Poppy replicas that are sold at VFW's and Lady Auxiliaries.  

 Last of the presentations was "Women of the American Revolution" presented to 5th graders from 1:40 PM to 2:30 PM. In this skit, the lesser-known life details of some of the most crucial women in the Revolutionary war were exposed. The parts were all played by active members of the Butler County DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). Names such as Betsy Ross, Abigail Adams, and Mercy Otis Warren along with several others.

 The performance of "Women of the American Revolution" then hit the road to the Morgantown Care and Rehabilitation Center to perform the skit again at 3:00 PM.
