Butler County Chapter NSDAR Honors their 2017 Veteran of the Year

J. Horace Chapman

It is once again that time of year when we take time out to celebrate the service of the many men and women who have served valiantly in our military, our veterans. The Butler County Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will sponsor its annual Veterans' Breakfast on Saturday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. in the Butler County High School Commons Area. All veterans are invited to come out and enjoy breakfast in their honor. Each year the chapter selects a Veteran of the Year to receive special recognition.  This year that person is J. Horace Chapman.

Horace Chapman was drafted into the United States Army June 21, 1945. He reported to Atterberry, IN and five days later he was in Camp Clairburn, LA.  After a leave, he went to Ft Dix, NJ and shipped to Italy and stayed 11 months.  He operated a gasoline-powered high-speed Caterpillar tractor, towed artillery weapons, and other military equipment.  Horace made an inspection of tractors by checking the condition of brakes, steering mechanisms, motor tracks, and other parts, repairing as needed.  Horace was discharged in January of 1947.
After his discharge, Horace went to Indianapolis and worked.  He then came back home in 1948 and began farming and continued for 18 years.
Horace is married to Sidney Hatcher, and they had one son, Bryon Lee.  He and his wife live in the Sugar Grove area in Sidney’s father's place.

Please join the Butler County Chapter NSDAR in taking time to salute our veterans. There will be a number of activities in our community to do just that. The breakfast will be on Saturday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. The annual county-wide program will be at BCHS on Friday, November 10 at 9:00 a.m. The VFW Auxiliary will sponsor a dinner on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. at VFW Post 5837 to honor their Veteran of the Year. The Veterans Parade will be on Saturday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m., with the Green River Chapter NSDAR hosting a reception for veterans at Morgantown Elementary after the parade.

There will also be a US Flag Retirement Ceremony conducted by the VFW Auxiliary and the Boy Scouts on Saturday, November 11. Watch for details about time and place.
