The Butler County Fiscal Court, at its August meeting, approved an agreement between the South-Central Workforce Board and the Butler County Jail. The goal is to reduce recidivism and enable certain Class D state inmates to begin preparing for life after jail by placing them in programs that will allow them to improve work skills.

On Friday, three offenders who have completed the Basics for Betterment Course had mock job interviews with the Butler County Betterment Group and will be ready to proceed with real job interviews soon. Travis West, James Conkright, and Jerome Mahoney started taking classes in October and completed training in Career Readiness.

Inmates who qualified for the program were required to take several classes at the jail, show a strong work ethic, and the ability to follow facility rules and regulations. The inmate will then work with the Kentucky Career Center participating in employment workshops, resume preparation, and other services.

Tara McMillin, Class D Coordinator for the Butler County Jail, put together the Butler County Betterment Program. Several members of the community take time from their lives to invest in those inmates in the program and support them as they transition back into the community.

"We are excited to be part of this program. Our goal is to reduce repeat offenders and better prepare inmates for re-entry into the community," said Ricky Romans, Butler County Jailer
