Butler Co. School Board Recognizes Student Achievement

The Butler County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. at Morgantown Elementary School. All board members were in attendance.

District Finance Officer Eric Elms gave his monthly treasurer’s report. The balance for the beginning of March was $2,206,898.75.  The end-of-the-month balance was $2,273,216.37.

The Board recognized several students. The first group recognized was Morgantown Elementary School’s archery team.  The team won first place in bullseye and 3-D at the 2018 NASP State Tournament. This is the second year in a row this team won first place in the state bullseye tournament.  Superintendent Howard congratulated the team, the coaches, and the parents on an excellent season and commended them on winning the state tournament and representing Butler County Schools so well. Howard said, “The future is bright for our archery program in Butler County.”  North Butler Elementary student, Grant Jones, was recognized by the board for being the 2018 Kentucky NASP State Tournament Boys Elementary Division Winner. Howard told the audience Jones shot a 286 out of 300, outscoring every other elementary boy in the state.

The next two students were recognized for academic achievement.  Dastin Scott, a student at North Butler Elementary, was honored for winning the Grandparent Essay Contest.  He wrote his essay about his grandfather, Rick Scott. Maddie Jones, another North Butler Elementary School student, was honored for winning the Butler County Schools District Spelling Bee. North Butler Principal Josh Belcher commended both students on their excellence in academics and for representing their school with class.

Superintendent Scott Howard gave his monthly report.  He said Latisha Cardwell, BCEA President, did a superb job organizing the trip to Frankfort for the KEA Call to Action Day and said Butler County Schools was well represented and was still able to have a productive, instructional school day. Howard said Miss Kentucky was able to visit all the Butler County schools last week.  He said, “I want to thank Becky Hankins for arranging the visit.  Miss Kentucky had a great message.” Mr. Howard thanked the local masons for donating 12 bicycles to Morgantown Elementary School to give away at the end of the year for attendance awards. He also thanked all who organized, spoke, and participated in the Butler County Public Schools Rally. Howard said he and Ms. Annis have been working on a $5,000 grant through United Way.  If awarded the money, it would be used to finish the LEAP bus project.

Board Member Debbie Hammers discussed her recent trip to San Antonio, Texas, for the National School Board Member training.  Hammers said, “It was one of the most exciting things I have ever attended.  There were approximately 7,000 people who attended, including school board members, superintendents, and school attorneys.”

·       BCHS Yearbook Field Trip Request to the Nashville Predator’s Community Ice Rink in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 18th, 2018
